What hath Banana republic wrought?

Imagine, dear reader, my surprise when this Banana Republic ad showed up in my mail.

(Now I know you're curious. Why? Is it because she is a broke-a$$ school teacher who can't afford Banana Republic? Is it because she can't really carry off their long, lean styles? Does it have something to do with her long-time crush on Tim Gunn?)

Nope.

It's the fact that the model is wearing A JEANS SKIRT!!!!!

Y'all.

Photo courtesy of etsy, where you can still get these suckers!

I know I'm dating myself here (we've already determined my age, so it's a moot point) but in the '80s and early '90s I always had at least two different jeans skirts in my closet at all times: a long one and a short one. It was my go-to item for all those in-between occasions like PTA board meetings and the one night a month that I got away from my kids to play Bunco (aka "wine and whine" or "beer and bee-otch").

Is this advertisement from Banana Republic a tease? (They don't have any jeans skirts for sale on their site, but maybe they're planning a HUGE launch. One never knows when it comes to fashion, does one?) According to the internet, folks like The Huffington Post and Popsugar have been giving us advice on how to wear a denim skirt of a little over a year now. Apparently, jeans skirts have BEEN back and they forgot to tell me.

Not sure I'll buy one this time around, as I don't wear anything that doesn't completely cover my legs (veins, you know) and I'm not sure how well I could carry off a denim skirt at this point in my life.  Maybe if I wait another 30 years and they come back into style again?

I bought one from a charity shop. At £5 worth the investment. Woolen tights are the answer for you, and knee boots. There you go, advice imparted.

Banana Republic is expensive in the UK sadly.

Are you sure the model isn't wearing short culottes, which look nothing like what they call culottes these days.

I bought a dark denim skirt at Clothes Mentor (second hand store chain...maybe you have one down your way? For sure, check it out if you do and haven't) a couple of months ago...after asking the salespeople if I was young enough to try it!

I have had a denim skirt that is about 10 years old, at least. I loved it is so much that I couldn't bring myself to get rid of it. Now it's back in, big time! I have been seeing my skirt all over the place as of late.

I've always had a love/hate with jean skirts! I owned them. I wore them. But they sitting down in them was always weird what with all the bunching ...

:)

I think you could do the skirt that they are showing here. In winter with textured tights. You probably wouldn't like it for summer. Yes, HP is right, they have been back for a year or so. I use Refinery 29 to keep me up on these childish things. Not that I actually BUY anything they say is in style. But at lease I can say I knew. I had the long jeans skirt - my favorite, the printed denim long skirt - gorgeous and I wish I still had it, the short denim skirt - I'm with Linda on that one, sometimes awkward - and then I also had a denim jumper I wore through all my pregnancies and I''m sure after.

Everything comes back eventually. I don't think I'll be buying one either, but then again I'm not exactly a fashionista. I'll leave that to my 20 year old daughter ;)
