Everyone likes an appetizer that's easy...especially when you can make it either sweet or savory.
I frequently make these when my kids come home as a way to stave off total starvation before the meal is ready. It just takes a few minutes.
Generally, the ingredients are very simple: crackers, cheese and two toppings: bacon (cooked and crumbled) and jelly or jam. This time I used two different crackers (wheatmeal and water crackers, both Carr's) and two different cheeses (sharp cheddar and brie), because I had a lot of both on hand.
Step one - start the broiler.
Step two - place the crackers on a baking sheet and put a little hunk of cheese on each.
Step three - put the crackers under the broiler for just a minute. DO NOT LEAVE THE OVEN BECAUSE YOU WILL FORGET AND THE PAN WILL BURN AND THE WHOLE HOUSE WILL STINK AND MAYBE THE SMOKE ALARM WILL GO OFF AND FIRETRUCKS WILL COME all because you left your crackers. Oh, wait. Maybe that's just me.
Step four - take the crackers out of the oven and top with either the crumbled bacon or with a dollop of jelly. Eat immediately. Or serve to your guests, whichever.
