It all starts with this guy, Lord Grantham. He is getting on up there in years (he's what--50?) and he needs to think about who will inherit his vast property, and it won't be his daughters (because they're girls and this is cavemannish-times...you can read about that HERE). So one of his daughters has to marry her cousin (as if this was Appalachia and not the UK) in order to keep the castle. Meanwhile, the servants (whose numbers are legion) are trying to keep the castle in order.
And that's where this $hit gets interesting.
These are the sisters, from left: Dead Rebel, Loosey, and Barker. They are wearing the latest in Laura Ashley spring fashion.
*The cousin goes down with the Titanic, perhaps because he isn't interested in girls?...
*So Loosey sleeps with a swarthy Mediterranean dude who is so swept up in the moment, he keels over, dead as a doornail.
This is not the last time that Loosey is...well, loose. Guys keep falling in love with her and she keeps playing. I'm looking forward to see who she plays with next.
*Rebel falls in love with the chauffer, who is an Irish rabble-rouser. She marries him, has a baby, and dies. Her husband is promoted to farmer. He has concerns that he will never fit in with the others, so he mostly just stands around. Very little farming is getting done.
*Barker falls in love with everyone. None of them love her back. She loves the Titanic dude, but he loves Loosey. She loves an old guy with a bad arm, but he leaves her at the altar. (This is not a metaphor. They are actually standing at the altar when he says he changed his mind.) She falls in love with her married boss at the newspaper, but he leaves her to go to Germany, where he can get a divorce. (Germany between the wars? WHAT WAS HE THINKING??? Actually, I know what the actor Charles Edwards was thinking...he was given the opportunity to do stagework with Angela Lansbury, and y'all know how I feel about Mrs. Fletcher!!)
Meanwhile, in the basement, we have drama with the servants.
*First, there's Mrs. Hughes the head housekeeper and Carson, who is in charge of butling. They are secretly in love and I think that Marigold may actually be their child.
*There's evil Thomas, who is evil. He is busy doing evil things.
*There is the cook, Mrs. Patmore:
...and her assistant, Daisy-of-the-ears, who is going to inherit a farm, but not the same farm.
*The sweethearts of the basement are Anna and Bates. Bates is the bad boy of the basement, kinda like Marlon Brando, and Anna is the nice girl who was raped by Mr. Green, who has met an untimely demise at the hands of....?
*And, last but not least, there's Molesley. Actually, Molesley IS least. Bless his heart, as we say in the south.
Most importantly, there are The Dowager Lady Violet and Mrs. Isobel Crawley. They mostly do this fun banter and I want to say "You wanna reindeer to go with that slay?" and I *heart* them. In a perfect world, we would all have a fun love/hate relationship like that, just to keep us on our toes. Plus, don't forget about the sweet-a$$ hats.
Now that you're caught up, won't you join me each week for my recaps? I promise that it'll be fun!!
