July’s book review: Bittersweet
This month, it was Cassie’s turn to choose our book, and she chose Bittersweet, by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore.
You can read Cassie’s review here.
Let me tell you what I thought of this book: while I was reading it, I felt like I should dress like this:
(Only holding the book instead of a drink.)
When in fact, I looked more like THIS:
(Not holding a book because I’ve been sucked into another episode of Real Housewives.)
Do you remember The Official Preppy Handbook from 1980? Well, these characters were DIRECTLY FROM THAT BOOK! They had the preppy names and the preppy schools and the preppy summer compound in Vermont. They had preppy parents and even preppy dogs…but they also had a secret. It was not very preppy of them. In fact, they had TWO secrets—both of them bad news.
Here’s what I think: ONE of the secrets was enough. The other secret was more of a sub-secret. It wasn’t developed well and the supposed-resolution was not very well-developed, either. The MAIN secret—I liked how it was dealt with. I’m just surprised it took so long!
So…if you want a “summer read,” this would be a good one. If you want to wait until next summer, when it’s out in paperback, then even better.
Our next choice is The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls, which I chose because my friends and I have spent some time at Yonahlossee, which is now full of mountain homes—some of them rentals. We occasionally spend the first weekend in November there and we do a little Christmas shopping in Blowing Rock, which is delightful! Anyway, I think this book has a secret too, and it might even have some *whispering* sex in it. Don’t tell my mom.
So...if your name is Muffy or Biff, you may want to check out Bittersweet. If you want to read something with s-e-x, you might want to try The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls.
